UPS Professors German Arevalo and Milton Tipan, members of the Electronics and Telematics Research Group (Grupo de Investigación en Electrónica y Telemática (GIETEC), presented a project on the efficient use of resources of information networks, especially means that are wireless and optical fiber that seek to improve the speed of transmission or broad band at lower costs. The project was presented during the 8th Latin American Conference on Communications, LATINCOM 2016, which was held in Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana de Medellin from the 15th to the 17th of November.

This is the most important conference in the region regarding telecommunications. Researchers, professors, students and people in this industry get together to discuss and learn more about information technologies, communication, networks and other related topics.

The research was indexed to SCOPUS; the first research project is titled "CATV, LTE and Data Convergence Test in Optical Access Networks" and it studies the feasibility of sending voice signals through the same fiber optic cable, for example high definition phone and video calls  to digital television or video streaming, high speed data (download archives, web sites, etc) in new generation optical networks.

The second project is "Analysis of FEC in digital data signal transmission with USRP over SD-RANs".  This project analyzes the performance of codes that allow the correction of errors in the bits of high-speed data transmission in next-generation wireless access networks called "software-defined networks", which allow greater versatility in the management and configuration but require high performance rates with low levels of signal error
