"Psychopathology, dementia and mental health in old age" and its relation with research

The psychology undergraduate program in the university's branch campus in Quito held a course titled "Psychopathology, dementia and mental health in old age, research and clinical and psychosocial intervention" which was led by Roberto Perez, psychologist and coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Ageing Center at Universidad de la Republica Uruguay.
During this academic event, held from the 5th to the 9th of June, they discussed issues regarding health, mental health and its relationship with research, intervention and public policies.
Roberto Perez said Ecuador is a young country that in about 20 years will face a generational change with great challenges. "We have to think about how to establish social relationships, about the health system, social security", he said.
Regarding dementia, he said it is important to look for alternatives of intervention besides pharmacological treatments. Treatments such as psychotherapy or psychosocial which include activities like exercise, gymnasium, cognitive processes, stimulation, creative processes. "Therapy must have a meaning, be interesting, productive, present an intellectual challenge and identity", said Perez.
The course was attended by students, professionals and professors who worked on a research proposal applied to Ecuador
