In August, twenty students from the achuar community who were majoring in intercultural bilingual education presented their final graduation projects through zoom. The students were from different communities in the Ecuadorian Amazon; Awananch Leonidas Tanchim Sumpa, Etsa Rodrigo Mayak Timias and Yajanua Celinda Taant Nankamai presented their projects related to the teaching of mathematics, reading and writing.

Mayak stated that the materials they used were taken from their natural environment (rocks, branches, dry leaves, sticks) because they are easily available to them and boys and girls easily recognize them and can be used for basic operations.  He said that people who are studying to become teachers in their communities should know how to speak their native language in order to have a better relationship with students.

Tanchim presented a project that redisigned didactic material of mathematics for children in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. Taant is Patricio Mukucham's wife; he is also a teacher and they are one of the very few couples in their community to have studied at the university.

The students said that one of main reasons they study to become teachers is to help children in their community learn.

Every year, about 400 students graduate from UPS as intercultural bilingual education teachers. They are from quichua communities in Pichincha, Imbabura, Cotopaxi and Chimborazo, as well as the achuar community from the province of Morona Santiago
