2024 Inti Raymi celebration in our branch campus in Cuenca

Cuenca, jueves 27 junio 2024

Our branch campus in Cuenca and other universities in the city celebrated “Inti Raymi”, a celebration that pays tribute to one of the most significant cultural traditions in the Andean world. This year our university was in charge of the organization; there were several academic and cultural activities attended by university officials, professors and students.

The event began with a conference titled: “Inti Raymi, la fiesta sagrada de los Andes”, led by Dr. Ariruma Kowii, an expert in Andean ancestral cultures. This conference marked the beginning of the entire week of celebrations filled with cultural diversity and ancestral knowledge.

On June 20th and 21st there were two talks: the first “Strengthening the generation, use and incorporation of knowledge of ancestral communities,” addressed the importance of integrating ancestral knowledge into modern academia. The second, “Andean World Vision and Spiritualities,” focused on deepening the understanding of spiritual practices and worldview of Andean cultures.

Both events were an opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences, bringing together students, teachers and workers committed to cultural preservation. On Thursday, June 22, there was a presentation of Research Projects from several universities. This stressed the academic contribution to the knowledge and preservation of ancestral cultures, and the role of academia in the conservation of cultural heritage.

Friday, June 23rd was the main celebration; there were dance and music groups from Cañar and Azogues. The celebration ended with a ritual performed by the “Yachay” (experts in ancestral wisdom). Universidad Católica de Cuenca will organize next year’s celebration. In the evening, the university held its traditional Cultural Friday with a music and dance festival.

The Inti Raymi celebration was an opportunity to learn about and appreciate our cultural roots and strengthen our identity.
