The potential of biotechnology, fostering research and entrepreneurship in human health, the production of harmless food, environmental remediation and biodiversity were some of the topics discussed by students and professors from the biotechnology undergraduate program during a celebration to commemorate biotechnologists.

The event was held on June 16th and there were also presentations of posters, entrepreneurial and research projects. During the closing ceremony, students with the best projects received an award. The winners were Mario León Iza and Roni Alejandro Paucasán. The best students during the last two semesters were also acknowledged.

Jose Juncosa, vice president of UPS's branch campus in Quito, encouraged students to get involved in research along with their professors. "A university that does not conduct research, has nothing to teach. A professor who conducts research, teaches differently and a student who teaches learns differently", said Nicolas Grijalva, president of the students association. He also invited students to create a university environment filled with innovation, support and cooperation.

Diana Calero, director of the biotechnology school, highlighted the integral education provided by UPS, she thanked the university officials for their support and encouraged students to work together "You are studying a major with lots of potential and many fields of application", she said.
