The communication and multimedia design undergraduate programs in our branch campus in Quito organized the 5th edition of communication conferences on emerging practices in new communication scenarios. The conferences were attended by students, professors and researchers.

The speakers were the UK, Spain, USA, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina and Ecuador; they spoke about communication in their country and the world. UPS president, Juan Cardenas, stressed the work carried out by the communication undergraduate program during its 25 years of existence and said: "today there are new ways of creating stories, broadcasting them and looking for ways to change society through this field. I want to congratulate these programs for being at the forefront of their sector".

Maria Sol Villagomez, vice president of our campus in Quito, stated that the conferences have interesting and up to date topics for professors, students and researchers and that the aim is to help improve society. She stated that today's communication demands creative professionals that contribute to social changes.

There were three keynote conferences; the first was "Emerging Narratives in Contemporary Journalism", by Omar Rincón, a renowned Colombian researcher and professor at the Universidad de los Andes. He stated that "journalism is not in crisis, what is wrong is what people are doing with it; we need one that makes citizens aware, questions powers, reinvents itself, investigates other ways of telling stories and is involved with society".

In the second conference: "Hybrid media activism" led by Emiliano Treré, a professor at Cardiff University, United Kingdom, he presented an analysis from the cultural, economic and social media and the influence of algorithms on social activism, as well as forms of daily resistance. "Applications and platforms are designed to serve power, but there are other logics that exchange information about opacity in relation to those of domination."

The conference "Digital Marketing for Entrepreneurship" was led by Pablo Vidal, professor of the master's degree in Strategic Communication at UPS. He pointed out that the important thing is to offer added value so as not to go unnoticed. "We have to be aware that our level of attention to this demand for information has to be structured, we must not fall into the clutches of information intoxication", he said.

The topics at discussion tables were: self-management and financing models for journalism; data capitalism and colonialism; communication and eco social conflicts: brand positioning, e-commerce and branding.

200 people took part in the workshops on sound narratives, storytelling, Instagram, and others.
