Environmental engineering students encouraged recycling and environmental protection

The environmental engineering undergraduate program in the university's branch campus in Cuenca held several activities aimed at creating awareness about the importance of recycling and protecting the environment.

-    Recycling competition "Ballena Verde": students in their fifth semester won first place after collecting 1,4 tons, second place was for students in second semester who managed to collect 860 kilos and third place or sixth semester students who collected 600 kilos. 

-    Photography competition "Realidad ambiental y ecológica del Ecuador"- 46 students took part in this competition. The winners were Boanerges Correa and Cristian Quito with the topic: pollution. Second place was for David Villalta and third place for Antonio Cevallos and Elizabeth Saquipay with the topic: biodiversity.

-    Competition for outfits made of recycled material: the winners were Samantha Vasquez  and Cristina Saquicela, second place was for Paola Sirenaula and Freddy Guaman and third place for Carolina Ramon and Jose David Sevilla

Conferences:

1.    Fabian Samaniego, specialist in environmental quality, graduated from environemental engineering at UPS and currently works in Dirección del Ambiente del Azuay. His talk was "Regulatory framework"

2.    Fernando Juela, specialist in the department of Biodiversity in Dirección del Ambiente del Azuay. His talk: "Biodiversity"

3.    Galo Vasquez, technician of the municipality's sanitation company. His talk: "Management of solid waste in the city of Cuenca"

4.    Fredi Portilla, PhD. Professor in the school of environmental engineering at UPS. His talk: "Climate change"

The activities were held to commemorate World Environment Day  celebrated on June 5th.
