Jose Juncosa is the new UPS-Quito Vice President

On July 22nd, Jose Juncosa was inaugurated as the new UPS-Quito Vice President for the 2015 – 2020 period by the university board. Days before the inauguration, the Salesian Inspector in Ecuador Father Jorge Molina had already announced the news to UPS President Father Javier Herran.

Jose Juncosa was born on September 24th, 1956 in Salta, Argentina. He finished his primary studies in two salesians institutions in Patagonia Argentina: Colegio Dean Funes de Comodoro Rivadavia and San José, de Puerto Deseado. He went to  Aspirantado Padre José Vespignani  high school in Ramos Mejia, Buenos Aires. He arrived to Ecuador in 1980 and worked in salesian missions from 1980 to 1983.

His education combines culture and pedagogy; he is currently a doctoral student in Latin American Cultural Studies at Universidad Andina Simón Bolivar, he holds a master's degree in the development of thought and innovative pedagogy, he is an anthropologist and was a professor of philosophy and pedagogy in Buenos Aires Argentina. 

He has broad experience in publishing, along with Father Juan Bottasso they started the Abya Yala publishing house in 1983. He has been the manager and the editor of this publishing house for two periods (1983 - 2003) and now since 2012. He was also the President of the Ecuadorian Book Chamber (200-2002) and Director of Área Universitaria Latinoamericana de Editorial Planeta del Ecuador from 2003 to 2007. He is currently a member of the UPS editorial board where he has made proposals regarding the university libraries and documentation centers.

He has been a professor at UPS since 2002. In 2007 he was named the director of the anthropology major, which he led up to now. He coordinated the intercultural studies center and historical research. In 2014 he was elected as a member of the university board at UPS-Quito.  

He has written articles, anthologies and research reports on interculturality and indigenous communities, especially in the Amazon. 

He was awarded the "Isabel Tobar Guarderas" award, which recognizes the best book on social sciences, for his book "Etnografía de la comunicación verbal"
