The use of videos to improve speaking

The university's English language institute in our branch campus in Cuenca held a competition which encouraged students to make a video to help improve their speaking skills; in all there were 29 videos made by students from different undergraduate programs.

The aim of this competition was to improve students' speaking and writing skills, as well as encourage students to work together.

Victoria Jara, director of the English language institute, stated that "the best ways to encourage learning is to carry out these type of projects and use different types of technology".

The videos were from 8 to 10 minutes and students could choose from different topics. To choose the winning video, there was a jury was made up by Juan Carlos Hidalgo, Cambridge representative in Ecuador, James Freeman, from United by Learning, and Magdalena Madany from Penn State University. They evaluated students' fluency, pronunciation and video quality.

The winning video was presented by Maria Emilia Aguilar Romero from level A1.
