An event was held at the “Casa de la Provincia del Azuay” to present the book “Enciclopedia de la Historia Nacional” written by Juan Cordero Íñiguez, Ph.D. y Blas Garzón Vera, Ph.D, members of our institution. Officials from the province of Azuay and the city of Cuenca attended the event.

Franklin Barriga López, Director Emeritus of the National Academy of History and general director of the “Enciclopedia de la Historia Nacional” project, stated that it will be made up of twenty-four volumes corresponding to each province of Ecuador.
Cesar Alarcon Costta, director of the “Academia Nacional de Historia” (National Academy of History) presented the book to the Prefect of Azuay and stated that we are heirs of a long historical past, which is part in our genetic roots and is evident in the characteristics of the friendly, enterprising and creative people from Azuay.

Juan Cordero Íñiguez, on behalf of the authors, explained the way they worked on writing the book. His job was to synthesize previous research that he had published in twelve volumes from the first inhabitants to the present day. He spoke about the most representative characters from Azuay, as well as the roads of Azuay, which is always a need for this province.

Juan Cardenas, UPS president, said “it is a pleasure to support activities that encourage research, value and the dissemination of culture and history of Ecuador. The university was founded in this city, our students are from the fifteen cantons located in the province of Azuay. I hope the university community reads the book; it is important to learn about our past in order to understand the present and plan a better future”

Juan Cristobal Lloret, Prefect of the province of Azuay, said events like these strengthen the identity of people from Azuay. He also said he will be in charge of organizing the celebration for the two hundred years of foundation of the province of Azuay next July.

During this event, the National Academy of History and Universidad Politecnica Salesiana signed an agreement that will allow the editors of the university’s journals and the newsletter from the National Academy of History to exchange knowledge and technologies.
