Raúl Álvarez Guale, new vice president in the university's campus in Guayaquil

The University Council, presided by Father Fransisco Sanchez, inspector of salesians in Ecuador, and Father Javier Herran, UPS president, appointed Raul Alvarez Guale as the new vice president of the university's campus in Guayaquil for the 2020 – 2025 period. 

The new vice president graduated from Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL) in 1999 as an engineer in statistical computing. In 2012, he completed a master's degree program in Productivity and Quality Management and a year later he obtained a diploma in ISO 9001:2008. Then, in 2019 he earned his Phd in Administration Sciences from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos de Perú.  

He has been a teacher for over 20 years, teaching undergraduate and postgraduate classes at Universidad de Guayaquil and at UPS. He was also the director of the Industrial Engineering undergraduate program since 2006, and the director of the Economic and Business Research Center at UPS since 2012 up to now, He has carried out several academic research on service quality, on water quality, and other work that has been published in different books and journals indexed internationally.

Raul Álvarez took office on April 15 and is accompanied by a team that is committed to the university's growth. "There is currently a lot of uncertainty because of the health crisis caused by COVID-19, this is part of the challenge of now taking office in Guayaquil, since the situation is critical in economics and health, but I am happy because I know I have a team of excellent professionals in the university", he said

One of his main objectives as the vice president of the university's branch campus in Guayaquil is to keep UPS as a benchmark for higher education in Ecuador and Latin America through continuous improvement, optimizing the work of various academic, technical, and administrative areas and departments. 

He expressed his entire support for the excellent teaching staff of the university, who are continually trained to provide quality education based on the Salesian principles of our patron Saint Don Bosco. Professors have been attending training sessions on the correct way of teaching online and the importance of quality education for our students. "It is a true academic opportunity that our teachers are taking advantage of, new professional experiences and with it, new forms of teaching that are implemented as part of the acquisition of knowledge," he said

During the inauguration ceremony of the new vice president, Fr. Javier Herrán highlighted the work carried out by Andrés Bayolo, who for 14 consecutive years was the vice president in Guayaquil helping with its growth and current position. "I thank you for allowing me to serve you, I have been at the university for a long time and I appreciate and respect what I have gotten, thank you very much for everything" Andres Bayolo.

Bayolo, who from now on will be the Coordinator of the María Auxiliadora Campus and director of the Economics undergraduate program, became the vice president of the university's campus in Guayaquil in 2006 with 800 students; at that time they used the facilities of the Salesian schools Domingo Comín and Cristóbal Colón; he now leaves office when there are over 9500 students, a modern and complete architectural infrastructure on the two university campuses, managing to turn the university in Guayaquil into the second largest private university in the city, ensuring the university education of thousands of young Ecuadorians.
