On January 20th, the university's branch campus in Quito inaugurated the continuing education course called "Sub national Finance" which was organized by the local sustainable development major and the German Technical Cooperation Agency (GIZ). The course will end on January 28th and will then begin in the university's branch in Cuenca on February 3rd.

The opening ceremony was attended by Karina Wanuz from GIZ, who thanked the university's effort to hold this course in its two campuses. Edgar Tello, acting vice president of the university's branch in Quito, said UPS is known for its social awareness and that throughout these years it has worked on community involvement, it has helped find solutions to national problems by educating highly capable professionals, generating research and strengthening continuing education courses according to people's needs.

Pablo Ortiz, director of the local sustainable development major, thanked GIZ and the association of Ecuadorian municipalities for supporting the dissemination of this course and education.

The instructor of the course, Daniela Oleas, holds a master's degree in economics from ILADES, Georgetown Santiago de Chile, she says that sub national finance allows decentralized governments to provide services through the creation of their own resources in order to avoid depending on resources from the central government.

On financial sustainability, she said goods and services can be financed in a suitable manner having a sustainable basis in time through permanent resources like taxes that will enable people to plan the development of the city in the mid and long term.

The aim of the course is to strengthen spaces that connect public finance and the development of cities along with a new urban agenda that will lead the way for cities for the next 20 years
