UPS professor Mariela Cerrada from our branch campus in Cuenca was named in the the latest Stanford University World Ranking of Top 2% Scientists, which was published by PlosBiology journal. The ranking names researchers who have had a considerable impact on science. 

Professor Mariela Cerrada ranks first in the field of artificial intelligence and industrial and automation engineering; she is the only women from Ecuadorian universities in this year’s ranking. She was also part of the ranking in 2019 and ranked first in the same field. 

 
Her work has had a great impact on the community; in 2019 and 2020 she ranked among the top 5 and top 10 researchers from Ecuadorian universities for having the highest number of citations. The Stanford University World Ranking takes into account the following factors:

- Information on researchers’ publications in the Scopus data base

- Time professors have carried out research during their career

- The number of citations the researcher has obtained

Professor Mariela Cerrada is part of the Industrial Technologies Research Group and professor in the mechatronics undergraduate program. Her work is aimed at industries and enables technology transfer.

This recognition enhances the work carried out by professors and students; it also helps the university in its internationalization process by strengthening research, innovation and teaching processes.
