UPS professor and researcher Xavier Serrano is currently working on a SGen Energy Management System that will be implemented to optimize energy consumption, its planning and management in the university's activities which will result in important economic savings.

Professor Serrano attended a course organized by the Spanish Assosciation of Standardization and Certification (Asociación Española de Normalización y Certificación-AENOR), which is an organization that provides societies well-being by improving technology produced by companies. At the end of the course he was awarded the "Auditor in Energy Management Systems ISO 50001".

ISO 50001:2011 is a model for efficient energy management in industrial plants and other organizations, it provides requirements in order to implement energy management systems in order to reduce consumption, costs and improve the environment.

Professor Serrano plans to implement the SGen Energy Management System in order to turn UPS into a leading organization in Ecuador in the implementation and research of energy efficiency projects and the sustainable integration of renewable energies in urban places, and therefore showing commitment with the environment and sustainable development.
