Webinar on the national and international economics

Students majoring in economics in our branch campus in Cuenca took part in the talk "Derecho de Competencia y aspectos generales de la Ley Orgánica de Regulación de Control de Mercado", led by representatives of the Superintendencia de Control del Poder de Mercado.

During the first talk, Rosa Alva Morales, spoke about competition law, she stated that one of the benefits of competition is having better prices, when there is an efficient production process that offers better conditions to consumers, they can acquire a greater quantity and variety of products. When talking about competition, we also talk about innovation, it is important that companies present innovation that is attractive to markets.

"Companies that do not innovate tend to stay out of the market," she also spoke about the laws that protect competition from destructive and illegal practices in order to promote efficiency in companies in a way that directly affects final consumers.

María Morocho, spoke about the abuse of market power, she explained that there are anti-competitive behaviors such as: predatory or exploitative prices, unjustified sale, unjustified price discrimination, unjustified exclusivity, refusal to sell, abuse of a situation of economic dependence. She pointed out that, for all abuses of market power, there are laws that control that power and that penalties are light, serious and very serious, ranging from 8% to 12% of fines based on the sale.

The director of the economics undergraduate program, Luis Tobar, stated that there will be more webinars and students and encouraged to participate in order to reinforce learning, especially in practical cases, of national and international reality
