The university’s choir group from our branch campus in Quito, along with the following choir groups: Unificado EIFA, UDLA, EnKanto; Coro Mixto Politécnico; Orquesta Sinfónica Ciudad de Quito; and Orquesta Nina Kuru, as well as soloists Nataly Sánchez Auz, Diana Galarza, José Cárdenas and Andrés Carrera, who were led by professor Ivan Acosta, presented the play “Requiem de Giuseppe Verdi”.

This play, considered one of the greatest in the history of music, was written in 1874 and is about the resurrection and rest of souls. The last time it was presented in Quito was in 2014. Carrying out the play was complicated, the coordination of schedules between the musicians, a place to hold this number of musicians on stage, makes the presentation impossible to carry out more frequently.

During the welcome speech given by Maria Sol Villagomez, vice president of our branch campus in Quito, she stressed the importance of having these events to strengthen culture and education, as well joint work between students, professors and members of the university community.

Rehearsals began in February 2024 in different places such as the Victoria Theater and UPS to assemble the sound of the instruments with the voices. For Karol Caicedo, director of the UPS choir group, this work “requires a lot of vocal stamina, good management of placement and sound as a whole, as well as the ability to transmit emotions through the voices and instruments of the orchestra”.

Ailyn Díaz, a student majoring in Communication and a member of the choir group, said this play has been very complex for her and has become a challenge. “One of my greatest satisfactions is to see that after so much effort and dedication as a choir, we have successfully completed the premiere of this play”. Verdi's Requiem will be presented in other places in the city of Quito in the coming weeks
