UPS professor attended the 14th Pan American Dairy Congress

Professor Narcisa Requelme presented her research results on milk production systems from five cantons in the province of Pichincha during the 14th Pan American Dairy Congress which was organized by FEPALE in the city of Puerto Varas, Chile.

The congress which took place from the 25th to the 29th April was attended by over 700 people from 25 Latin American and European countries; the congress was co-organized by the Oficina de Estudios y Políticas Agrarias (Odepa) y la Cooperativa Agrícola y Lechera (Colún) from Chile, la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (FAO), la Organización Mundial de Sanidad Animal (OIE) and  Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación para la Agricultura (IICA).

In the congress people presented technological innovation and practices in family agriculture for milk production systems, which is the research conducted in the university's Dairy Research Group (CILEC for its acronym in Spanish). Dr. Requelme spoke about the importance of innovation in this field and then presented the results from her research conducted in five cantons in Pichincha. The research was carried out with the help of Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and its program titled Agris Mundus.

Dr. Requelme also took part in the second meeting of milk analysis laboratories (REDLAT) of Latin America and Spain, which the university is part of. During this meeting they worked on the 2017 work plan, where there are training sessions and activities to strengthen the work carried out in laboratories. 

Agricultural Ministers from several countries attended, so did the president of FEPALE, Bernanrdo Macaya, the general director of the Inter American cooperation institute for agriculture, Victor Villalobos and former president of Uruguay, Jose Mujica.
