UPS-Cuenca officially presented the Carneros and Carneras (rugby and soccer team) coaches and uniforms for this year's season.

Carneros started seven years ago thanks to the initiative taken by a group of mechanical engineering students who wanted to foster rugby in the city. The team first had to train with coconuts since there were no rugby balls available in the country at that time. At the beginning, very few students joined the sport, but nowadays there is women's rugby team and even teams for children.

UPS President Father Javier Herrán Gomez said that amateurism is essential in sports since professionalism only seeks profit. An athlete should play a sport for the love of the game and this is what the Carneros rugby team from UPS does, they play rugby because they love it.
UPS-Cuenca Vice President Cesar Vasquez said it is important to do sports at the university and that is why the university supports these two teams, which have participated in local, national and international competitions.

Rene Calle, a representative from the Prefecture of Azuay, said it is important to support the initiative of young people who decide to do sports since it is way to keep them distant from troublesome situations.

The rugby team coach is Douglas Rodriguez, and he will be assisted by Jhonny Cuzco and Fernando Usiña. The men's and women's soccer team will be coached by Edisson Méndez along with his assistants Byron Méndez, Paúl Rodas, Fabian Carrion, Jose Moncada and Carlos Vanegas.

Edisson Mendez, thanked the university authorities and the companies that support  this sports project. He said that Carneros play rugby and soccer for the love of the game.

At the end of the ceremony the players gave all those people who continuously support the team a present to show their appreciation.
